Indonesian for Beginners or Pemula 1 is best for you who just start to learn Indonesian.
This course will give you a strong foundation on the basic structure of the language and
colloquial Indonesian to communicate with local people right away. All the contents of this
course are taken from daily conversations and personal stories of native Indonesian speakers.
Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed
at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others
and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives,
people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the
other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
No prerequisite for this course.
It takes approximately 30 class hours plus additional 30 self-study hours to complete this course.
Elementary Bahasa Indonesia course or ‘Pemula 2’ is designed for you to continue your Indonesian
learning journey to the next level. Most of the contents of this course is still considered
colloquial Indonesian. The topics are still taken from daily settings such as shopping, weather,
people’s descriptions, health, and so on. You will also be introduced to semi formal Indonesian
in the form of simplified authentic articles.
For our Indonesian proficiency leveling, we use Common European Framework of Reference for
Languages (CEFR) as our guideline. Here is the level description for Elementary Bahasa Indonesia
Course (Pemula 2) or A2:
‘Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate
relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).
Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information
on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background,
immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.’
To take this course you need to complete Indonesian for Beginner or have at least 60% overall score on our Indonesian Placement Test.
It takes approximately 30 class hours plus additional 30 self-study hours to complete this course.
In this Intermediate Bahasa Indonesia course or ‘Menengah 1’, you will start learning formal
Indonesian through authentic texts, videos, and audios. You will begin to understand the
grammatical structures used in formal Indonesian and how they change in informal settings.
Therefore, you will recognize Indonesian grammar in both contexts when you hear them, but your
speaking will not be rigid and awkward.
Some topics that we will cover in this course include employment, entertainment, education,
health services, and Indonesian culture.
For our Indonesian proficiency leveling, we use Common European Framework of Reference for
Languages (CEFR) as our guideline. Here is the level description for Intermediate Bahasa
Indonesia Course (Menengah 1) or B1.
‘Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered
in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling
in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics, which are
familiar, or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions
and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.’
To take this course you need to complete Indonesian for Beginner and Elementary Bahasa Indonesia Course or have at least 80% overall score on our Indonesian Placement Test.

In this Intermediate Bahasa Indonesia course or ‘Menengah 1+’, you will start learning formal

This Upper Intermediate Indonesian Course or Menengah 2 is a continuation of Menengah 1 course. In this course, you will continue exploring formal and informal Indonesian through more complexed texts, videos, and podcasts. Some topics that we will cover include Indonesian movies, media, life styles, news, and Indonesian politics.

level description for Upper Intermediate Bahasa Indonesia Course (Menengah 2) or B2.
‘Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including
technical discussions in his/her field of specialization. Can interact with a degree of fluency
and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain
for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a
viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.’
To take this course you need to complete the Intermediate Bahasa Indonesia Course.
It takes approximately 60 class hours plus additional 60 self-study hours to complete this course.
In the Advanced Bahasa Indonesia Course or Mahir 1, you will learn Indonesian using unmodified authentic materials. Some learning resources include clips from movies, news, podcasts, and radios. You will be reminded of language structures that you learn in the previous courses based on the learning contexts.
For our Indonesian proficiency leveling, we use Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
as our guideline. Here is the level description for the Advanced Bahasa Indonesia Course (Mahir) or C1/C2.
“Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning. Can express him/herself
fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively
for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects,
showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.”
